Home Lifecycle Bar/Bat Mitzvah Educational Requirements
Education Requirements
At Temple Sinai, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah program is a voluntary commitment. The student and his/her family decide whether or not to participate in this significant life cycle experience. In order to make that important decision, the family should consider that B'nei Mitzvah is a covenant which involves the student, parent(s), and congregation. All three must contribute toward this special simcha in order to give it meaning and beauty.

Becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is an affirmation of one's Jewish commitment and maturity and, therefore, knowledge of Hebrew and Jewish studies must extend beyond the ability to read a Torah portion. Our congregation's Rabbis and Board of Education have determined that, in order to be eligible for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony at Temple Sinai, a student must have completed certain educational and religious requirements.

The requirements are:

  • All students must be enrolled in our religious school program or a Jewish day school.
  • All students must be receiving appropriate Hebrew education, as approved by our Director of Education .
  • Students must have completed the 6th grade before the day of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
