Reestablish the Rhythm in Your Life

Multiple times a week I hear people profess that they don’t know what day it is. In other conversations, I hear difficulty committing to dates for activities that may or may not take place in the future. Some of us are bored, others are over-taxed. While some people are fine living day-to-day, others who are innate planners find the uncertainty anxiety-provoking. Our relationship with time is being tested during this season of pandemic. We are dancing to a rhythm-less song, clumsily finding ourselves out of sync with others because we are out of sync with ourselves.

I love that Shabbat helps me reestablish rhythm in my life. She is a constant. She comes without fail right on time every week, whether I’m busy or bored or think it’s still Tuesday. She comes with a light that cuts through the fog of these days. The faint heartbeat, that distant rhythm of “regular” life still beats. From the very first moment we utter, “Shabbat Shalom,” we resuscitate our own sense of rhythm and breathe life into a week that was an endless stream of Blursdays. Shabbat helps us hold onto time which has become slippery and distorted. God knows, we all need something to hold onto these days.

So, I hope this Shabbat helps you hold on. I hope this Shabbat helps you breathe. I hope this Shabbat brings you peace.

With wishes for good health and strength and time to enjoy all of life’s sweetness,

Beth
