The Pet Blessing

Rabbi Sam Shabman

As you may know, a defining moment of my year was the day I brought home my puppy Huckleberry "Huck" Trief. He has been a bundle of fluff, love and comfort. A true blessing. I think of him particularly this week since he underwent a small surgery...and in our Torah Portion we are reminded of the importance of animals.

In Parashat Noah, God said to Noah, “Because the earth is filled with wrongdoing and corruption and robbery I am going to destroy it. Make yourself an ark of wood with enclosures for animals and gather food for all aboard. I shall flood the earth and destroy all that has the spirit of life.”

Noah's ark has come to symbolize a celebration of life, rebirth, and the potential for change...and well of course, the blessings that animals bring to our world.

This weekend, we invite you to celebrate the special animals in your life by joining us for a pet blessing. Please register here: https://www.templesinaiatlanta.org/event/pet-blessing.html

In addition to our pet blessing this Saturday at 2pm, this Shabbat we also have the opportunity to provide those in need with blessings.

Despite it being the harvest season, there is a shortage in our community. The Community Assistance Center is in desperate need of canned fruit and jams. Please bring these items to Temple Sinai over the next week. Lets consider this Mitzvah "low hanging fruit."

There are so many chances to offer blessings and to be a blessing this fall. We hope that you are able to use this shabbat to be part of the beauty and the bounty that the season has to offer.

Shabbat Shalom!
