By Rabbi Sam Shabman

This is our season of resolutions, where we take a fresh look at promises we made and gaze with hope to a fresh year ahead. This is the time we look at resolutions from years past and determine how we can live them in the year ahead.

Our Young Adult Imagine Sinai committee has been hard at work dreaming of ways in which we can realize some of our resolutions from just a few years ago. As a refresher, we were tasked with:

  • Intentionally increasing the number of 20- something’s in leadership positions at Sinai;
  • Re-examining the financial model needed to attract and retain Young Adults
  • Partnering with organizations meeting success with this demographic;
  • Launching an exciting and appealing program

Our steering committee, led by Jeff and Alexis Rosengarten, has been convening regularly and, toward the balance of last year, brought forward ideas to turn these goals into a reality. Consider what 2018 has in store for our under-40 demographic:

  • Our ATID program, under the leadership of Kyle and Jessica Goldich, continues to offer creative and fun programming, aimed at connecting people in this stage of life with each other and with our synagogue community;
  • We will launch a compelling new dues model aimed at young adults, with a structure more aligned with our worldview and whose success will bring more Young Adults to the Sinai family
  • Our monthly Torah on Tap programs have drawn a nice cohort to different locations around Atlanta for some drinks, some learning, and some laughter;
  • We are partnering with OneTable to launch a new Shabbat initiative titled, “Shabbat On Sinai” where groups of young adults will gather around the Shabbat Dinner Table. We have already lined up some of our hosts and look forward to making a place at the table for everyone interested.
  • And we are delighted that there are those from our group currently serving on the Board of Trustees and in other leadership positions at Sinai.

I look forward to updating you in the weeks to come as some of these pilot programs formally launch. In the meantime, you can help by sending to Jaimee Boettcher (jboettcher@templesinaiatlanta.org) the names and contact information for those under 40 who may be looking to connect and engage.

As you can see, your synagogue is truly on the cutting-edge as a new generation makes Judaism their own. And as we look at the 50 years that have made up this amazing community, we are laying the groundwork for another 50 years and beyond.
