When I considered relocating to Atlanta, one of the things that most excited me was the city’s history regarding the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s voice echoes loudest and his light shines brightest here in Atlanta. From the Civil Rights Museum to the King Center and Ebenezer Baptist Church, Dr. King’s presence still shapes the Atlanta experience.

As the ripples from a rock thrown in the water are strongest at its center, so are the ripples of Dr. King’s work here in Atlanta. This Shabbat we are excited to have on our bima Ilham Askia, Executive Director of Gideon’s Promise, to share how criminal justice reform is this generation’s civil rights movement. Gideon’s Promise is a local nonprofit public defender advocacy organization that provides training, leadership development and mentorship to improve the quality of legal representation for the clients and communities they serve.

As we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this week of his birthday, let us link ourselves to his sacred mission, and reaffirm our commitment to the work that is yet to be done to realize his dream.

Shabbat shalom,

Beth
