Do you ever attend services and feel as it you are simply going through the motions, reading and singing words without any real sense of depth or purpose? Maybe (like me) you have difficulty relating to the words as literally presented in the prayer book, and thus find it difficult to derive spiritual meaning or connection during services. Perhaps the entire enterprise of prayer is problematic for you, even serving as a deterrent from attending services at all.
It is likely that one or more of these statements will not only resonate with anyone reading this description, but also with virtually every single member of our congregation! The truth is that prayer is difficult. Despite personal success and confidence in other realms of our lives, we enter the sanctuary for services and are immediately reminded of our lack knowledge, or our inability to understand the Hebrew, or our lack of familiarity with the developing resources to help us do something about it.
Using curricular materials developed by colleague Rabbi Mike Comins, along with video conversations featuring leading spiritual voices in Jewish life today, our two classes will offer an innovative, spiritually dynamic opportunity to explore the idea of prayer with the hope of helping participants discover ways to make prayer "work." I encourage all who are able to join me for what should be spirited, engaging and interactive conversations.
