Pickles and Kavod

What do pickles have to do with kavod (respect)?

Mr. Danny's gardening chug (elective) with Orim students is a hands-on experience in gardening and preserving food. Our learners have had the opportunity to harvest seeds from mature plants, started a garden bed of herbs and vegetables, and now have had the chance to use traditional Jewish pickling methods to preserve food.

This week, Mr. Danny's group ground spices by hand using bulk seeds (no plastic waste from new spices here!) and used some of the herbs they planted to flavor the pickling liquid. They learned that pickling is a great way to preserve food before it goes bad, which is a very valuable skill when it comes to reducing your kitchen waste!

So, back to pickles and kavod: what's the connection? When we learn different ways to extend the life of our food, we reduce the amount of food waste in our own homes. Have you ever had produce you've had to throw out because you didn't get to it in time? You could try pickling it to give it new life (and new flavor)!

Now for the hardest part -- waiting until we meet again on November 7th for the big taste test!
