50 Days of Spiritual Moments: Israel

04/03/2018 08:00:21 AM

Each Tuesday, our spiritual moments will explore Israel through a geographic, economic, and sociological lens. We will learn how advances in all of these areas have impacted Israel and the world at large.

Jewish Homeland - Ingathering of the Exiles

Why Israel? Why is this our homeland? The expression “ingathering of the exiles” comes from the Biblical promise that Moses made with the Israelites in the Book of Deuteronomy.

The text states: “God will bring back your exiles and have mercy upon you. God will once again gather you from all the nations, where God has dispersed you.
Even if your exiles are at the end of the heavens, God will gather you from there...[and] bring you to the land which your ancestors possessed and you will take possession of it. God will do good to you and will make you more numerous than your ancestors.” Deuteronomy 30:3

These words of Torah have connected the Jewish People to Israel for thousands of years and help explain our sometimes innate yearning to return to Eretz Yisrael. The “ingathering of the exiles” is at the core of the Zionist movement and the Israeli Declaration of Independence. So central is this concept to Israeli identity there is a main street in Tel Aviv called “Rehov Kibbutz Galuyot”, or “Ingathering of the Exiles Street.”
