Noar Sunday’s curriculum is based on hands-on, authentic Jewish learning, and centered around community building and personal choice. The curriculum for Grades 2-5 is on a two-year cycle to match the two-grade eidah (unit) structure with each eidah building on one another.  Each eidah also has an annual chugim curriculum that varies year to year based on the skills of our staff.

Zehut: Grade 6
Theme: What Responsibility Comes with Being a Bar/Bat Mitzvah?

We will be learning about identity (“zehut” in Hebrew). The 6th grade program is designed as a bridge to help pre-teens transition from the youth realm to the teen community & the more mature identity-building that comes with it. We explore: What does it mean to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah? What responsibilities come with being a teenager in today’s society? How can I navigate the social-emotional experiences of celebrating and being the center of attention?

The 6th grade curriculum asks these central questions:
• What does it mean to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah?
• What responsibilities come with being a teenager in today’s society?
• How can I navigate the social-emotional experiences of celebrating and being the center of attention during a pandemic?

The one year curriculum includes:

Jewish History
• Study Jewish history and the role of Jews throughout the civil rights movement, especially in Atlanta
• Learn about WWII and the Holocaust with the Museum of Tolerance

Community
• Students will form a small group Bayit community at the beginning of the day, forging relationships to their peers and teachers
• Act as role models for the younger students
• A special overnight community-building retreat that solidifies friendships
• A focus on Tzedek projects for B’nei Mitzvah, and the role of chesed (kindness) throughout

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Social/Emotional Readiness
• Students will explore social-emotional topics surrounding Bar/Bat Mitzvah readiness and ceremonies through the Moving Traditions curriculum
• Students and their parents will attend one (or more if desired) family workshop during the year
• Students will explore prayer with a special 6th grade-only t'filah with a clergy member
