Rabbi Brad Levenberg

How interesting it is to read Parashat Shoftim, with its emphasis on the establishment of six cities of refuge scattered in the Land of Israel, against the backdrop of the harrowing stories coming out of Maui.

The resonances between the ancient concept found in the Book of Deuteronomy and the contemporary humanitarian crisis stemming from environmental devastation in Maui – wildfires caused in part by drought conditions related to climate change - are both poignant and enlightening. In the scenario from Torah, cities of refuge were established to provide sanctuary for those unintentionally causing harm, offering a place of safety from retribution. Similarly, the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Maui due to environmental degradation forces communities to seek refuge in unfamiliar lands, mirroring the timeless yearning for protection and security.

These parallels underscore the innate human need for shelter and stability. Just as cities of refuge offered a haven for those facing unintended consequences, Maui’s environmental humanitarian crisis highlights the urgent global challenge of displacement caused by ecological upheaval. Equally important, both instances spotlight the moral imperative of extending compassion and support to those uprooted from their homes.

Applying the words of sacred text to the Maui crisis serves as a compelling reminder of humanity’s responsibility – of our collective and individual responsibility – to protect and preserve the natural world. It also underscores the importance of swiftly addressing ecological imbalances and offering support to those affected. Just as the cities of refuge stood as a testament to a just society in ancient times, our response to the Maui crisis today reflects our commitment to not only live our values but also to safeguard our neighbors who are in need.

May we come speedily to their aid.

Shabbat Shalom.
