Bring Them Back

Rabbi Sam Trief

In the Torah verse made famous by Jewish singer and songwriter Debbie Friedman z”l, God says to Abraham: “Lech Lecha - to a land that I will show you” (Genesis 12:1).

Many have interpreted this verse as a teaching to listen to our spirits, to explore new places and to journey into the unknown. Our understanding of this piece of Torah often encourages us to leave home. But as I study the verse now, all I can think about are the hostages in Gaza aching to return home to safety and to the arms of their loved ones.

As we read Lech Lecha this year, I  pray for a homecoming for our hostages, and I pray for stability in our hearts and homes. Often in our culture we embrace shaking things up, trying new things, taking on new adventures, but I think this week we need calm and a sturdy ground on which to stand.

As Shabbat approaches, we squeeze our loved ones a little tighter, and we pray for the return of our brothers and sisters who find themselves in the most unstable and unpredictable of places.

For them, we say these words:

“Our God, we ask that You be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Send complete rescue and full redemption to those held captive by the enemy. Strengthen their spirit and bring them our prayers that they be protected from all harm.

Our God, implant understanding in the heart of the enemy that they may return all captives in the wholeness of body and spirit. Grant strength wisdom to the Israel Defense Forces that they may secure freedom for the captives without loss of life.

Grant strength of spirit and courage of heart to all the sons and daughters of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar to release bonds of captivity and allow us all to live in freedom.

‘They shall call upon Me, and I will answer them;

I will be with them in distress; I will rescue them, and honor them’ ”

And together we shout: BRING THEM BACK.
