Welcome to Orim (Grades 4-5) at Noar Sunday! For Tzedakah this year, all grades are focusing on organizations that fight for economic justice. Each eidah (unit) has a different organization to focus on, and Orim focuses on Family Promise. Family Promise is a nationwide organization that delivers innovative solutions to families fighting homelessness. One of the ways is by partnering with spaces (like Temple Sinai!) to provide a safe space for a week at a time.
The Sinai Family Shelter is a wonderful way for our Temple Sinai community to come together and directly impact the lives of others. Temple Sinai is one of many interfaith organizations that supports Family Promise of North Fulton/DeKalb and provides temporary room and board for families in transition. Throughout the year, the Sinai Family Shelter hosts up to four families that are in need of housing and hospitality. Temple Sinai provides the facilities and our members volunteer their time by providing meals, miscellaneous supplies, overnight hosting, and helping the families move in and move out.
Our host weeks for 2021 are: * October 10-24 * December 19-26
How Orim families can help:
Provide Dinner: Prepare or purchase dinner for the guests (drop off dinner by 5:30pm).
Overnight Hosts: Pack your pajamas, pillow, bedding and toothbrush! Stay overnight at Temple Sinai with our guests before starting your day to ensure that our guests have everything they need during the overnight (8:00pm-8:00am).
Help with Move-in/Move-out Days: Arrive on Sunday to either unload the belongings of our guests from the moving truck and set up the rooms for our uests and overnight hosts or load the belongings of the guests onto the moving truck and clean the rooms (Sundays, 1-2 hours).
Miscellaneous Supplies: Donate supplies needed for the upcoming host week. Items include but are not limited to gift cards, paper goods, dry goods, lunch foods and drinks. *Noar Students can also bring these on October 17th to Noar Sunday to donate.
Laundry: Pick up a bag of bed linens and towels at the end of the host week. Wash, dry, fold and return to Temple Sinai later that week.
Why help with Family Promise? Tzedakah is more than about giving money each Sunday. This is a great way to help teach your children how to give back to the community in an experiential way.
We aren't comfortable staying and unsure about the COVID spread. How can we help without staying the night? Great question. The jobs listed include many options for not staying the night, and if you do plan to stay the night, Family Promise has extensive COVID protocols in place. Please reach out to Michael Drucker and Deb Poch who can tell you more about how they are keeping families safe during the pandemic, as well as ways to help without staying in the space.
Can my kids stay the night too? YES. They get the unique experience of sleeping in a classroom!
